Contract Type:

Our developers have the freedom to take control of providing a beautiful experience for our customers. We love agile and work in small squads to ensure each squad has a focus and a mission. This way we ensure every squad member counts, has a voice, shares ideas and is involved from the moment they join. We deliver great products to our customers and make sure we remain digitally at the forefront of the market.

We’re looking for an experienced Java Developer to come and join our small but highly efficient team and hit the ground running. Our squad is responsible for surfacing our vehicle valuations on the Auto Trader website, our Dealers’ Websites and to 3rd parties via APIs. Central to this role will be evolving our existing products and developing new ones to best meet the needs of our customers. We integrate with various other systems so there’s a lot of opportunity for cross squad collaboration and getting involved in wider technical discussions and decisions. We are a data-driven bunch and look to make decisions based on evidence rather than opinion. Our technology stack at Auto Trader includes Java, Dropwizard, SQL, Mongo, Kafka, React and AngularJS, to name a few.

We use test driven / continuous delivery practices to build RESTful JSON web services and web applications using Java and JavaScript. We make sure our systems can scale to meet the demands of a high-traffic website as we can peak as high as 70 million page views per day. We really care about how performance impacts our customers. We are looking for people with a deep interest in technology who are comfortable finding and adopting new technical approaches all the way from the browser to the database – it’s a fast moving market so we have engaged and responsible self-organising teams.

To be successful in this role we need you to be able to combine your technical aptitude with a product focused approach where we discover what to build using analytics, experiments and actually talking to our customers. Our technical squads have direct input into product development; that fact is baked into how each of our teams are structured around a product. You’ll need to have led projects and be comfortable coaching and mentoring colleagues with their technical and non-technical skills. We’ll expect you to have a solid understanding of Java development and to be comfortable talking about system design and architecture.

We offer a salary between £40k – £50k with a great flexible benefits package, which includes 25 days holiday, pension and lots of extras that you can personalise to suit your lifestyle. You’re given the choice of either a Mac or PC and as much free tea, coffee and fresh fruit as you like! We’re based at First Street in Manchester in some pretty cool offices so if you like the idea of having a meeting in a retro ice-cream truck or VW Camper Van then this is the place for you!

In addition, to salary and benefits, it’s really important that we talk about what else we can offer you. We’ll give you the support and the tools in order to develop in your role. We believe that development takes on many forms. We hold regular code katas, send our developers to conferences, host regular external meet-ups in our event space and workshops that help you take your career to the next level. So as you can see, your development is not just limited to what you learn at your desk, there’s so much more! If we sound like the kind of place for you then we would love to hear from you.

Everyone is unique in their own way and we are looking for people from all walks of life to become part of our inclusive culture. We make sure our recruitment practices are fair and we always aim for you to have a great experience throughout. Our commitment is to ensure you get the chance to be the best that you can be, showcase your full potential and make the right choice for you.
