About the role

We’re always hunting for passionate front-enders who have their finger on the pulse of the latest technologies and are keen to work alongside like-minded individuals; learning and developing their craft in a collaborative and energetic environment.

Candidates who fit the bill will become an integral part of our front end team working on a variety of technically challenging projects spanning key areas of the customer journey, with the autonomy to help drive and shape projects in a way you deem most appropriate. You’ll work closely alongside our industry leading UX designers, graphic design and back end teams, with plenty of opportunities to pair program and learn from developers who really care about software excellence and share ideas through weekly workshops, developer meetings and monthly hack days.

Here’s what you can expect to be doing

As a leading online retailer, millions of customers each year will see and enjoy your work. You’ll be responsible for the design and development of exciting, innovative front end pages, systems and functionality using a mixture of cutting edge and well established technologies and our own internally developed front end libraries and frameworks.

You’ll write lean and semantic HTML, carefully crafted and efficient SASS and functional JavaScript, often with libraries such as React and Redux (when the need should arise), all upon a foundation of NodeJS based build tools like Gulp and Webpack to take care of those trivial but essential front end tasks like compilation, concatenation and minification.
Beyond developing new innovative front end features, application heavy key journey functionality and beautiful, bespoke multimedia heavy brand pages for all the amazing manufacturers we work closely with like Samsung, Microsoft and Apple, you’ll be working across our international and client sites and getting stuck into other general areas of development such as optimisation, page performance, accessibility, Multi Variant Testing and much more.

A few things about you

We use the following technologies daily, so commercial experience with them is beneficial, although you don’t need to be a master at them:
JavaScript and CSS based frameworks / libraries
Node JS based tooling (Gulp / WebPack etc.)
Good understanding of browser discrepancies
Familiarity with developing for mobile devices
Understanding of unit testing
CMS experience
Page performance / optimisation knowledge
Animation techniques (CSS or JavaScript based e.g. WebGL)
Good knowledge of Web APIs
.Net experience
We’re looking for candidates who enjoy their job and take pride in their work, who like the thought of joining a young, vibrant and close knit team and are confident enough to work both individually and in collaboration with others.

A bit about us

We’re seeking those rare creatures that challenge the ordinary.
These people can achieve what others can’t because they care about doing great ‘stuff’…

Challenging the norm isn’t easy… It takes unconstrained thinking teamed with an attitude for doing what’s right. The UK needs a retailer that champions their wishes and offers them an experience they deserve. Upping the game and evolving with your customer means there is always a better way.

We build our teams and support the culture to help them achieve this. If you want to right wrongs, make a difference and learn more every day, get in touch and show us what you’re made of.f

Why choose AO?

It’s not about the job you need now, it’s about who you want to be and where you want go. The thing about AO is that you don’t have to leave to move on. We have the kind of environment where people learn and thrive and be the best they can be. That’s our values talking.

We empower each and every person to push the boundaries of what’s possible. We’re growing rapidly and so should you. Our environment and our culture are vibrant and engaging, you almost have to feel it to believe it. We’ve got everything you could need in one place, so it’s really no wonder we were named Retail Week Employer of the Year 2015.
“Our people are our biggest asset, they’re our culture: that unique, indescribable thing that makes us really different.”

Great people deserve great things

As an AO employee you can take full advantage of our benefits package. As well as fundamental benefits, like pensions and holidays, we have designed our “AO Perks” to help you out financially, make your work life a little easier or make your home life a lot more fun.
