Senior Media and PR Officer

Inspiring; that’s both what you’ll be and what you’ll be doing in this key role. Without strong public confidence and awareness, NHS Blood and Transplant wouldn’t be able to save thousands of lives every year.

Join us as a Senior Media and PR Officer and apply your drive, media and public relations expertise to see that we carry on doing something amazing every day.

This is an exciting time for the media and PR team at NHSBT. We are going through a period of significant team and organisational change, in tandem with wider NHS change. If you’re an ambitious communicator and like the challenge of carving out a new direction for your work at a time when the NHS is in the spotlight like never before, then we want to hear from you.

NHS Blood and Transplant is responsible for providing a reliable, efficient supply of blood, organs and associated services to NHS hospitals and patient services. We make a huge difference to so many people, so we need the best support around to ensure that we continue to do so.

You’ll be responsible for building strong, positive relationships with everyone you encounter and, ultimately, delivering world-class media and PR activities to help get the right mix of blood donors to meet the needs of patients in the future.

This role will have a strong focus on our ambitious aim to recruit more donors from Black, Asian and Ethnic Minority backgrounds by promoting the importance of ethnically matched blood for patients. Media activity will include highlighting powerful and emotive patient stories to raise national awareness of the urgent need for more donors from a BAME background, particularly black people.

This role will also support the wider ambitions of the press office to build awareness of having the conversation about organ donation and the general recruitment for blood, tissue and stem cell donors.

Previous experience either working in press and PR in a large or complex organisation, or working as a journalist in newspapers or radio/TV is essential. Excellent news writing, judgement and organisational skills are also a must in order to be comfortable working in a fast-moving environment involving daily contact with national and regional media and generating positive coverage of NHSBT’s achievements and goals. You must have the confidence and media knowledge to be able to take part in a media out-of-hours on-call rota as well as acting in a supervisory role within the Media and PR team.

Whether you’re liaising with journalists, drafting promotional material, reactive responses, carrying out research or editing the magazine, your dedication, determination and decision-making will prove the cornerstone of our success together. And with a flexible benefits package including a generous pension scheme, it’s not just others who’ll benefit from your work.
