Manchester has a new addition to the feast of online food and drink publications – a Good Egg. Two former chefs turned journalists are hoping to serve up something a bit different with the new website when it formally launches in the city next month.

Co-founder Alex Mays, who is currently a freelance writer at the Manchester Evening News, said he and fellow co-founder Ben Hayward had recently studied journalism together at News Associates and decided they wanted to put their experience in the food industry to good use.

“We like to think we’ve found a gap in the Manchester market – the food scene is growing at such a fast rate.

“Yes, there are a lot of food blogs but we want to offer something that’s a bit more informed. We have the industry background which helps up in some situations.”

Although the site is part-time enterprise at present, Mays said they intend to develop it as a business once the content has built up. Alongside the usual openings news and reviews, the pair will be looking to produce more in-depth features and taking a different angle by looking at the stories of local suppliers.

The website, at www.goodegg-mcr.co.uk, is already up and running and now the duo plan a launch event in the Northern Quarter on September 19.
