Barnsley agency HMA Digital Marketing is working with the NHS on an app to aid clinicians when prescribing blood components at a patient’s bedside.

HMA won the tender after being approached by NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) to propose a solution for the design and development of the app.

Once complete, the app will be used to assess behaviour change in prescribing blood transfusions with the aim of improving safety and encouraging the use of evidence-based practice.

HMA is working with a diverse group of medical professionals including junior doctors, consultant haematologists, transfusion practitioners, a quality manager and the NHS Blood and Transplant technical lead for the project.

Aman Dhesi, Patient Blood Management – Regional Lead, at NHS Blood and Transplant said: “It is great we are working with HMA on this project to ultimately help improve the safe and appropriate treatment for patients who may need a blood transfusion.”

Laura Slack, healthcare expert at HMA, added: “We’re delighted to be working with the NHS on the design and development of a new blood app. Our partnership has made it possible to bring together complementary skills to address key healthcare challenges and improve treatment for blood transfusion patients.”

Once developed, the cross-platform app will be evaluated and trialled at two NHS hospitals.

HMA works with a number of clients in the life sciences and healthcare sector, with its work including a weight loss management app called mHealth Assist.
