A total of 17.3million unique UK browsers visited the site, which is now managed from the BBC’s MediaCityUK base.

Richard Burgess, head of BBC Sports News and BBC Radio Sport, had tweeted last week that 8.6m and 7.3m unique browsers had visited the site on May 8 and May 9 respectively, when news of Ferguson’s shock resignation first broke.

According to BBC Sport Interactice editor Stuart Rowson, that represented the largest amount of traffic since last summer’s Olympics.

Then, 37m UK browsers came to the site in total across the Games, an average of 7.1m per day and well ahead of the previous record to that point of 5.7m in one day.
