John Whittingdale has been sacked as Culture Secretary as Theresa May appoints her new Cabinet.

On his Twitter account, Whittingdale said:

“Has been a privilege to serve as Culture Secretary. I wish my successor every success & will continue to support creative industries.”

In the post for just over a year, Whittingdale published the long-awaited White Paper into the future of the BBC. He said that the corporation should be more competitive and open up to the independent sector, as well as working closer with local newspapers.

The paper also called for the abolishment of the BBC Trust.

The BBC will remain a key issue for his successor, with the Charter Renewal at the end of this year.

Prior to taking up the role, he was chair of the House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport select committee for a decade.
