Dark River, the third feature from local filmmaker, Clio Barnard, has begun shooting in Yorkshire this week.

Barnard is behind the critically acclaimed films, The Arbor and The Selfish Giant, and this latest release stars Ruth Wilson (The Affair, Saving Mr Banks), Mark Stanley (Game of Thrones, Kajaki) and Sean Bean (The Martian, The Lord of The Rings).

It’s about Alice (Wilson), who, following the death of her father, returns to her home village, for the first time in 15 years. She’s there to claim the tenancy of the family farm, but faces hostility from her brother. The dispute unearths traumatic memories which have remained dormant for years.

It’s being produced by long-term collaborator Tracy O’Riordan from Moonspun Films, with Lila Rawlings, Andy Harries and Suzanna Mackie from Left Bank Pictures’ executive producing.

“Dark River is a visceral, haunting and lyrical story and we’re delighted to have assembled our regular collaborators to help bring Clio’s beautifully crafted script to life and welcome DOP, Adriano Goldman to the team. Ruth Wilson and Mark Stanley’s fearless commitment to the roles of siblings Alice and Joe leading up to the shoot is exciting to behold,” said producer, O’Riordan.

It’s backed by Film4, the BFI Film Fund, Screen Yorkshire and the Wellcome Trust.

It will be filmed over the next 5 weeks on location.
