Controversial teatime drama Jekyll and Hyde dropped by ITV

Jekyll and Hyde, the controversial ITV Studios-produced teatime drama, has been dropped after just one series.

Writer Charlie Higson confirmed on Twitter yesterday that the show would not be recomissioned.

His reimagining of Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous story, set in 1930s London, hit the headlines in October when its first episode attracted 800 complaints for what was said to be disturbing pre-watershed content.

Media regulator Ofcom is expected to make a ruling early this year.

It was subsequently postponed in the wake of the Paris attacks.

The decision not to order a second series may be more linked to a decline in ratings, from 4.3m (18.9%) for the first episode in October to just 1.8m (7.6%) for its climax on December 27th.
