A primetime Liverpool-based drama series from Jimmy McGovern has been commissioned by BBC One.

The six-parter (6×60), Broken, is described as a “state of the nation piece”.

It is written by McGovern and co-produced by long-term collaborator Colin McKeown, from LA Productions, the recipient of an MBE in the latest honours list.

They said: “We are both proud and privileged to be producing this new six-part primetime drama series for the BBC, written by Jimmy McGovern from our home city of Liverpool.

“It plots the perspective of a local catholic priest Father Michael Kerrigan and that of his congregation and their struggle with both Catholicism and contemporary Britain.”

Broken was commissioned by Polly Hill, controller of BBC drama commissioning.

McGovern and McKeown are currently working on a 90-minute drama for the BBC called Reg, starring Tim Roth and Anna Maxwell Martin.

Reg follows the true story of Reg Keys on a journey of grief and defiance after his son Tom Keys is one of six RMPs murdered in Iraq.

Another BBC collaboration was Common, a 90-minute film based on the controversial Joint Enterprise Law.
