BBC1 has commissioned four more episodes of North East-set police drama Inspector George Gently.
The series, written by Peter Flannery and based on the novels by Alan Hunter, stars Martin Shaw as a London police inspector fighting crime in Northumberland and County Durham in the late 1960s.
The new episodes will begin filming next week with a broadcast date set for next year. The most recent four-part series aired in February this year and averaged 6.5m viewers.
Gently’s sidekick DS John Bacchus, played by Lee Ingleby, will return for the new episodes.
Ingleby told RadioTimes.com: “I love it. It’s fun. Me and Martin get on really well. We have fun and it’s interesting. What appeals to us is it’s not a boss and sidekick thing, there are two people who love to hate and hate to love each other and their relationship is very interesting.”
