Star FM cancels long running Three Legends show

Fourteen years since it began broadcasting on Century Radio, Three Legends has been axed again, this time from Star FM.

When the North East station revived the phone-in format in 2012 it was described by local press as a “victory for the region.” It was presented by former footballers, Malcolm Macdonald (Newcastle United), Bernie Slaven (Middlesbrough) and Micky Horswill (Sunderland) – later replaced by Dickie Ord.

However, in a statement on the Three Legends website, the trio said:

Sincere apologies to our ardent listeners and followers over the last 14 years regarding the Three Legends show.

If we’re being honest behind the scenes we’ve been fighting against the tide financially for over a year now.

Unfortunately Star Radio has admitted and told us that they simply cannot afford us or the show.

We’d like to thank everyone who has listened and contributed over the years, you have made us the number one North East sports show.

Supermac, Bernie, Dickie, Dave and Jonno.

At its peak, in 2006, the Legends had more than 75,000 listeners.
