BrainFreeze logoCBBC has commissioned a science-based animated comedy shorts series from the Dublin-based indie Kite Entertainment. The new commission, Kite’s fourth from CBBC, is for a 13 x 4 minute series entitled Brain Freeze.

Featuring a blend of puppetry and animation, Brain Freeze is the follow up to the CBBC/RTE Jnr series, Science Fiction.

The new programme is scheduled to begin broadcasting next year on CBBC and RTE.

Kite produced three 33 x 90 second series of Science Fiction for CBBC/RTE and the series were later sold to Discovery Asia and various other networks, including channels in Finland, Israel and France, via a distribution deal co-ordinated by Aardman Rights.

The Science Foundation Ireland has provided a grant to Kite to help with production of the new series.

CBBC controller Cheryl Taylor commissioned the new series and the exec producers will be Colm Tobin and Hugh Lawton. The writing team comprises Aidan O’ Donovan, Maria O’Loughlin and Damien Owens.

Brain Freeze will see a reprise of Prof Mike McCork and Dr Sorcha Knowles, joined by a guinea pig floor manager Colin and a team of TV robots, as they again grapple with the ‘big science questions of the day’, such as ‘What Is The Oldest Living Thing?’, ‘Why Do We Dream?’and ‘Do Aliens Exist?’.

Cheryl Taylor said: “At CBBC we are very excited by the commission and, like our viewers, can’t wait to get our brains frozen by Knowles, McCork and their blend of entertaining humour and fabulously interesting scientific facts.”

Kite managing director Darren Smith added: “It’s great that this Irish made series will get to air on an Irish channel as well as CBBC. For us CBBC is the HBO of kids TV and RTE Jnr, as the original backers of the Professor and Dr Knowles is their natural home, so we’re really delighted that the SFI funding allows the series to run on both channels.”

Kite also produced Anonymous for ITV1 in a co-production with Tiger Aspect and it is also working ón an Irish version of the Secret Millionaire for Channel 4.
