Journalist and broadcaster Kelner in Leeds hospital “to remove tumour”

Martin KelnerThe well-known broadcaster, journalist, author and podcaster Martin Kelner, is in St James’s Hospital Leeds following an operation to remove a tumour.

Kelner was born in Prestwich in Manchester and has worked in regional press and radio for most of his life starting out as a reporter on the Western Daily Press in Bristol.

His radio career began at Hallam Radio in Sheffield and in 1986 he was offered his own shows on both Radio Leeds and Radio 2.

He is credited with being the first presenter to give airtime to Caroline Aherne, who portrayed the Mrs Merton character on his radio show ad-libbing  with Kelner for around eight years.

He also enjoyed spells at LBC, Piccadilly Radio, Radio Aire and Yorkshire TV, and has become a regular voice on Radio 5 live as a pundit on Saturday morning show Fighting Talk.

He was until recently a presenter on the noon till three pm show on BBC Radio Leeds.

Responding to a question on Twitter on Monday, Kelner said he was “having good days & bad days… Not out of the wood yet. Lot of pain today. Cd b a longer road back than I hoped”.
