North East stations make strong showing in Sony Radio Academy Awards

sony_radio_awardsThe nominations for the 2013 Sony  Radio Academy Awards have been released this afternoon. There are several stations in Prolific North’s patch which have been nominated for awards including five stations which are up for station of the year in their category.

The five stations nominated for station of the year in their respective categories are BBC Radio Humberside and BBC Tees for smaller stations, BBC Newcastle and Metro Radio  in the 1 million plus audience category and Radio 5 live up for the overall UK station of the Year.

BBC Tees Breakfast and Metro Radio’s Steve & Karen’s Breakfast Show are nominated in the breakfast categories along with Xfm Manchester’s Breakfast Show with Tim Cocker. Xfm Manchester is also nominated in the best competition with the work on its Our Way on Xfm Manchester promotion.

BBC Radio Merseyside’s documentary, Hillsborough: Truth and Justice, is nominated in the best coverage of a live event category with Ciaran’s Cause, a programme produced by Real Radio North West appearing in the community category.

Michelle Livesey of Key 103 appears in the radio journalism category with Radio 5 live picking up a host of nominations including Nicky Campbell and Victoria Derbyshire up against each other in the nominated in the speech radio broadcaster category.

Smooth Radio, which is run from Manchester, is a contender for UK radio brand of the year.
