John Pickford named Bauer Radio news editor in chief

One of the longest serving news editors in commercial radio has been named radio news editor-in-chief of Bauer Media.

Key 103’s John Pickford takes up the newly created role to oversee news strategy and delivery across Bauer’s Place Portfolio.

He’ll also be working alongside its national radio team to share expertise and best practice.

Pickford will report directly to Owen Ryan, group content director, Bauer Place, North of England and Scotland.

“We are continually reviewing how news is brought to listeners in the best way possible and these key appointments ensure our stations across the Place Portfolio continue to deliver best-in-class news and sport multi-platform content,” said Ryan.

“Consumer demand for news information delivered across the multi-platforms of FM, DAB, online and mobile is growing rapidly. News will continue to play a pivotal role in our quest to deliver excellent content and deepen audience relationships, allowing the stations to connect, entertain and inform.”

Bauer has also announced that Lorraine Herbison will become head of news and sport for Scotland, reporting to Pickford.

Recruitment for a head of news and sport for England is to begin shortly.
