What a night! Over 800 people packed out Event City last night for the fifth running of the Prolific North Awards – and by general consent it seems to have been the best yet.

A room packed to the rafters with talent from across the North’s creative industries sector – digital agencies, production companies, app developers, PR and integrated agencies, research agencies, animation companies, TV stations, radio stations and many more.

Host Justin Moorhouse

Twenty ‘big Ns’ for work that reinforced just what talent, creativity and innovation there exists in this part of the world, with every corner of it represented.

And a chance, for one night, to bring the whole sector together for a unique occasion that is by far the largest of its type outside the capital. It was simply a night not to be missed.

Returning for a second year, host Justin Moorhouse kept an entertainingly firm hand on proceedings while, once the gongs had been handed out and the bottles downed, the familiar figure of Clint Boon soundtracked a collective letting-down of hair.

A huge thanks must go to our headline sponsors Click Consult and Dock10, our event sponsors Pitch Consultants (Twitter Wall) and Better Placed (SnapChat) and our category sponsors Manchester Metropolitan UniversityCDi Yorkshire, Steamhaus, Beever and Struthers, Pitch Consultants, Better Placed, The Loop, Quantcast, Bing, Group IMD and Digital Gurus.

Thanks also to Putting Edge for providing the mini-golf entertainment, Dock10 for putting together a video mash-up of the year’s big Prolific North headlines, and Mosquito Digital for a video review of Prolific North Live.

We Are Boutique picking up the award for Small Integrated Agency

So down to the awards themselves. First up to collect the award for Animation/Graphics Company was Flipbook Studio – the company’s third success in four years in this category – with the judges impressed by how it had increased turnover by 35% and invested in staff, technology and premises.

Best Small Digital Agency went to Altrincham-based Marketing Signals, who had enjoyed a “cracking year” and increased staff numbers from six to 11. The judges especially loved the company’s “no bullshit approach”.

Best Large Digital Agency went to Leeds-based CDS, who had impressed the judges by investing significantly in its infrastructure and personnel, resulting in an “exemplary year of profitable and substantial growth”.

Independent Production Company included the night’s first Highly Commended, which went to Audio Always, with the winner announced as True North who had enjoyed an “outstanding” year topped off with new investment from Sky Vision.

More Yorkshire glory came in the next category – for Small Integrated Agency – with We Are Boutique winning for increasing sales by over 50% in the past three years, with staff growing from 14 to 21.

Large Integrated Agency went to Sheffield agency Jaywing, who had grown turnover to £36m and were delivering “best in class” data science solutions.

The Media Agency category went to AKA North, based in Manchester, where profits are up 59%. The judges particularly liked its “passionate approach and clear focus on the sectors they target and their evident commercial nous”.

A hotly contested Media Sales category saw a Highly Commended nod for More Media Sales before Channel 4 claimed the trophy with judges hailing the “exemplary sales performance” at its Manchester HQ.

Event City was packed for the 800-strong occasion

Small PR Agency was awarded to Roland Dransfield in Manchester, who had impressed judges with the way it had diversified from its long-time property focus.

Brazen was named Large PR Agency, with the Manchester agency praised for reworking itself into a “new period of strong growth”, with UK staff numbers up to 32 and profits up 15%.

True North & Channel 4’s “highly original piece of programming”, The Lie Detective, picked up the Broadcasting – Entertainment prize.

Search has become the fastest-growing division within MEC Manchester and it was duly recognised with the SEO & PPC Agency award, while Content Team went to MEC WAVEMAKER, who had grown to 24 content specialists in a “cracking” debut year.

The Digital/Social Media Campaign category saw a Highly Commended for Rule 5’s Half Way to a Billion campaign for British Cycling, with Modern English taking home the award for its Foo Fighters Glastonbury campaign. The judges hailed the agency’s “chutzpah” to fly to LA and deliver a campaign that reached 50 million people.

B2B Marketing/Integrated Communications Campaign went to 3ManFactory’s work for Innova Solutions, with the Preston agency praised by the judges for an “exceptionally creative campaign”.

Best Broadcasting Commercial was won by PHD’s “original & somewhat controversial” work for BMB, which saw a “significant” uplift in sales.

The Website category went to Childline, created by Amaze, with the judges impressed with how the Manchester agency had anchored its approach on identifying what young people actually wanted from the site, while Best App went to Silverchip’s Bolster Systems app, which had delivered an “exceptional” ROI of 560%.

Best Video went to an “uplifting and inspiring but unashamedly simple” video created by the Manchester United Foundation.

B2B Marketing/Integrated Communications Campaign ( Less than 50k) was won by Prohibition’s “brave” and “innovative” work for Interflora, while the B2C Marketing/Integrated Communications Campaign (Over 50k) award was picked up by BJL for its “quirky, fun and extremely engaging” #RonsealAdBreal for Sherwin Williams.

Finally, Best Broadcasting Programme for News & Factual saw a third award of the night for Leeds-based True North, whose Breaking the Silence was an “exemplary example of effective cross platform delivery” with over 800,000 viewers.

Congratulations to all winners and nominees – and don’t forget we’re back at Event City in October for the eCommerce Show North and the Northern eCommerce Awards.
