The Yorkshire town of Golcar is getting accustomed to sharing the landscape with film crews as work starts on the new ITV drama series, Jericho starring Jessica Raine.

The eight part series is based in the 1870s and tells the tale of people living in the shantytown, built in the shadow of a viaduct, which the community was brought together to construct.

According to the local paper, the Huddersfield Examiner, the crews have ‘taken over’ the historic Colne Valley Museum and residents have been asked to park their cars away from the site.

Executive producer Kate Bartlett said: “We’re delighted to be embarking on the production of Jericho, an epic character driven drama set in the visually striking landscape of a frontier community. We’re also thrilled that we have a wonderful cast with Jessica Raine, Hans Matheson and Clarke Peters in the leading roles.”

It is the latest in a series of major films to be shot in Huddersfield, after Hollywood stars Sigourney Weaver and Liam Neeson were in town to film A Monster Calls, due for release next year.

And there are also plans to shoot scenes for a second series of the gritty TV drama Happy Valley, starring Sarah Lancashire.
