After over a decade as a Daily Mirror journalist, Kelly spent six years as publisher and director of content at Trinity Mirror before leaving in 2012.

Since then he’s also been a non-executive board member of the Association of Online Publishers and acted as a consultant for start-up VisualDNA.

His role at Local World, whose titles include the Hull Daily Mail and the Stoke Sentinel, will see him lead delivery of digital product and strategy. He will report to chief executive David Montgomery.

He said: “At the very core of Local World’s strategy is a profoundly transformative vision for digital content and advertising. I’m terrifically excited about joining the team.”
