Disney+ has announced a host of new content, which will air on the streaming service in 2022 and 2023.

Among the new titles include Welcome To Wrexham; and a new series from Sally Wainwright.

Welcome to Wrexham will go behind the scenes of Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’ takeover of Wrexham football club. Disney has today confirmed that the series will debut on 25th August.

Staying with football, David Beckham will star in a new docuseries, Save our Squad as the former Manchester United and England player mentors a struggling grassroots football team.

Co-produced by Twenty Twenty and Beckham’s content company, Studio 99, it’s described as an “uplifting, transformative journey of a lifetime.”

“It is fantastic to be making Save Our Squad with Twenty Twenty and to shine a light on the kind of grassroots football that I experienced growing up and which gave me so much at the start of my life in the game,” said Beckham.

“I was so fortunate to have a long and successful playing career and now to have the opportunity to give back to these communities as a mentor is incredible. Developing and nurturing young talent is so important in the game and it is great to be working with Disney+ on this project.”

Disney has also commissioned a new “swashbuckling” action and adventure series, from Sally Wainwright (Gentleman Jack, Happy Valley). The Ballad of Renegade Nell is made by BBC Studios-backed, Lookout Point.

The 8×45 minute series is about Nell Jackson, who when she’s framed for murder is forced into a life of highway robbery.

“I can’t wait to bring swashbuckling highwaywoman Nell Jackson to the screen. Nell’s a ball of irreverent, blustering energy, fighting against the privileged gatekeepers of English society in 1705, battling to contain mysterious forces within her and her enemies as she goes on the run with her two sisters,” said Wainwright, who is also executive producer.

“It’s a thrill once again to work with Faith Penhale and the super-talented team at Lookout Point. I’m so excited to partner with Disney Plus for this series, with their supportive approach and magnificent commitment to bringing this three-hundred-year-old story to the biggest possible global audience.”

The Full Monty will also return as a limited series, starring many of the original cast. That’s still in production across the North of England.

The UK commissions are part of Disney’s commitment to “source, develop and produce original productions at a local level” with at least 50 production films in Europe by 2024.
