Hyperlocal Today is blazing a trail in online local news publishing.
It’s building a network of mobile-first news websites around the country, dedicated to filling the void left by the decline of local print newspapers.
Each site is run by experienced journalists living at the heart of communities they know and care about. They provide a one-stop shop for the stories that happen in their town or patch, shining a light on the news, issues and people that matter.
Our first site, Altrincham Today, is read by over 80,000 people each month, with a social media community of 14,000. A second site, West Kirby Today, is nearing 2,000 Facebook followers only a few weeks since its launch, and there are a number of other sites in the process of being set up.
It’s why Press Gazette recently suggested that “we are on the cusp of a ground-up renaissance for local journalism”.
Altrincham Today is also the current Altrincham Chamber of Commerce Startup of the Year, and we were the only hyperlocal title nominated at the O2 Media NW Awards in November.
There are now a number of highly effective ways for businesses to communicate to their customers through Hyperlocal Today websites, including native advertising, display advertising and our jobs boards. With the decline of print advertising channels and the proliferation of smartphone usage, the opportunity is huge.
We’re looking for an ambitious and highly motivated person to market these opportunities to the businesses and organisations within Altrincham and neighbouring towns. In partnership with the editor, you will devise and coordinate a detailed marketing plan in order to capitalise on the opportunities that currently exist in both digital and hyperlocal news publishing.
As the Hyperlocal Today network grows, however, you will also be required to provide strategic sales and marketing support for the journalists who are editing sites up and down the country (this will largely be done remotely).
Ideally we would like someone with marketing or sales experience. To start with, this will be a commission-only role, but the percentage of the commission will reflect the initial lack of a basic salary.
The terms are very flexible – we’d require around two days’ work a week initially but these hours could be done at the employee’s own convenience and would be done from home – so it would most likely suit a freelancer looking to supplement an existing salary.
If the role goes well, we would be quickly seeking to make this a permanent position with a basic salary plus commission.
It goes without saying you will have excellent writing and communication skills and a real determination to succeed within a startup environment.
Most importantly, you’ll be personable, professional, a self-starter and enthusiastic.
