In July 2016 the City of Manchester will host Europe’s leading general science conference – The EuroScience Open Forum, which plays host to one of the largest gatherings of science media in the world. With this prestigious event comes the designation of European City of Science, a first for the UK, which will encompass an exciting programme public events, special commissions and engagement activity; bringing the city alive with science. Marketing Manchester is seeking a Head of Press to work across both the conference and public engagement programme to ensure that these landmark events reach the widest possible media audience in the UK, Europe and beyond.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 10 years Media/PR experience, ideally but not essentially including science/technology and or events/conference experience. You will have a strong news sense, be highly credible with excellent judgement, verbal and written communications skills. We are looking for someone:

• To create and implement innovative and high profile press and effective PR campaigns which deliver results.

• To work strategically, setting objectives, defining audiences, crafting messages and strategies; getting buy in from third parties (speakers, contributors, sponsors, VIPs) to maximise opportunities; proactively generating newsworthy stories and distributing press material through your extensive well established networks.

• To oversee an international press pack of 300+ journalists from across the globe, including running the media centre, managing press daily conferences, press points and media tours.

The role is internationally focused and may require some overseas travel.
