BBC One drama Happy Valley, produced by Manchester-based Red Production Company, and ITV’s Granada Reports were the big winners at the RTS North West Awards on Saturday.

More than 450 industry professionals and guests attended the event at the Hilton Deansgate, which was hosted by actor and comedian Les Dennis.

And Manchester-set Happy Valley picked up Best Performance in a Single Drama or Drama Series in both the male and female categories, with Kevin Doyle and Sarah Lancashire the respective recipients. The series also took home Best Production (Craft).

BBC chief promises to tackle sound issues after Happy Valley complaints

Granada Reports claimed Best Regional News Programme and Best Regional Story for its coverage of the Hillsborough Inquests, while its reporter, Andy Bonner, was named Best Regional News Journalist.

BBC One’s Reg, produced by Liverpool-based LA Productions, received two awards, winning for Best Single Drama or Drama Series, while the Best Script Writer award went to Jimmy McGovern and Robert Pugh.

Best Performance in a Continuing Drama went to Tina O’Brien of Coronation Street (pictured above).

Alex Connock, Chair of the RTS North West Centre and MD of Shine North, said: “TV production is one of the North West’s big employers and global export industries. It’s also just really good fun making TV shows and talking about them – as anyone who was at the awards last night will testify.

“Once again there were some brilliant winners, some witty speeches and some people who got a bit carried away on stage. We would not want it any other way.”
