Cricket fans will now be able to get access to local radio commentary of county cricket matches through the BBC Sport app.

The latest update for the app comes at the start of the county cricket season and also includes an alert service for wickets and results as they happen. It’s much like the service offered during international matches.

“This is what we’re all about, bringing the action to the widest possible audience and connecting people to the sport they love, and just in time for what promises to be a thrilling County Cricket season,” said Ben Gallop, BBC head of interactive.

“This next phase in mobile audio commentary brings many exciting opportunities to open up the full range of coverage available from both BBC Local Radio and our national output.”

It’s part of a wider partnership between MediaCityUK-based BBC Sport and the England and Wales County Cricket Board.

The BBC Sport app has been downloaded almost 6m times in the UK alone.
