Mike Hughes, a former executive editor and print publishing editor at the Evening Gazette in Middlesbrough has been named as editor of the Yorkshire edition of BQ Magazine.

He joins the business publication next month, replacing Andrew Mernin, who is stepping down after 4 years.

“I am thrilled and very proud to have been asked to edit BQ magazine in Yorkshire. Through my work in regional media, I have been highlighting and supporting successful businesses for more than 30 years,” said Hughes.

“With a 6,000 square mile ‘patch’ starting just yards from my doorstep, I can’t wait to start working alongside Yorkshire companies and the inspirational people who create and develop them and drive the regional economy.”

After more than 20 years at the Birmingham Post, Hughes relocated to the North East in 2010, first at the Evening Gazette and more recently acting as a PR consultant.

“Mike has a fabulous pedigree as a business journalist and a great track record when it comes to celebrating business success. I am certain that he will continue to make sure that our unique and growing business audience in Yorkshire treat BQ as quite simply essential,” added Alan Dickinson, associate publisher at BQ.

His predecessor, Andrew Mernin is leaving to set up a digital copywriting and PR agency alongside Kris Headland.

“I’ve had a fantastic time covering Yorkshire’s hugely diverse business community in my time as editor and have met some truly inspiring entrepreneurs along the way. I wish Mike every success in his new role,” he said.
