The Manchester Evening News has promoted two internal staff to the plum positions of Manchester United and Manchester City editors.

We revealed in July how the Trinity Mirror-owned title was recruiting for the roles, with a recruitment advert for the United role requiring a “dynamic innovator with a deep knowledge of both Manchester United and digital publishing”.

But despite the weight of external applications that the adverts no doubt attracted, the MEN has plumped for current sports writer Rob Dawson for the United role and Paul Handler, who looks after sports content on the MEN website, for the City job.

Trinity says that Dawson and Handler will be working closely with associate editor Paul Coates and writers Stuart Mathieson (for Man Utd) and Stuart Brennan (for Man City) “to drive audience growth and engagement”.

Editor Rob Irvine said: “I am certain that Rob and Paul and their teams of top notch writers will continue our rapid audience growth and ensure that Red and Blue fans will be guaranteed an unrivalled service of news, analysis and opinion.”
