The perils of a career in regional press are told in a new novel by Liam Barnes.

A reporter himself, Barnes graduated from the University of Manchester and then trained at News Associates in Manchester. He now writes for Police Professional magazine.

E-book, The Angle, has been influenced by his early experiences of journalism doing work placements – although he is at pains to point out that none of the characters are based directly on any of the people he met…

He described the book as: “A devastating depiction of the isolation, entitlement, myopia and unprofitable pursuits plaguing the press, from its lowest unpaid roots to the hack kings of the column.”

It tells the story of fictional reporter Chris Young, an enthusiastic young reporter, who writes for a local paper. Moving over to trade publications and then the nationals, he returns to the regionals as a long-in-the-tooth newshound struggling to come to terms with the new digital age.
