“Bigger and better images and a fresh, new design – these are just two of the changes you will notice on the new Liverpool Echo website” said Maria Breslin, digital editor of the Echo and Liverpool Post. “I believe we are delivering all our tried and trusted content in a more appealing way.”
Breslin said that the site has been built in-house and Rippleffect, the Liverpool-based digital agency owned by Trinity, was not involved, adding that the website is on the Escenic platform but has been modified in-house.
Among the new features the title has adopted is Trinity’s company-wide policy of requiring readers to log in via Facebook if they want to comment, a twice-daily newsletter, a new listings guide in association with Planvine, a greater emphasis on photography and, following the path taken by the new Wirral edition, more focus and clearer signposting of local news.
The new In Your Area tab offers both a drop-down menu and a map form which readers can drill further down. There is also a new aggregation service which groups content about individuals and organisations together for related reading.
Readers who were registered on the old site will now need to re-register and as with other Trinity-owned titles, readers without a Facebook account will be unable to comment on the site for now.
Breslin said: “We wanted to make the Liverpool Echo more tailored to our readers’ needs and we also wanted to make it more accessible from mobiles.
“And at the same time we wanted to create a website that’s more enjoyable, informative and up to date.”
